Ages 4–8 · a map for parents
Math Facts by Age: What to Practice
A rough map of what's usual at each age, and what to reach for. Children vary a lot, so go by what your child can do, not the number on the birthday cake.
Age 4–5: numbers to 5
Lots of counting real things. Start bonds of 5 with fingers. Use bonds of 5, ten-frame sums to 10, and the plus 1 game.
Age 5–6: facts within 5, then 10
Common Core asks kindergartners to add and subtract within 5 fluently (K.OA.A.5). Try the plus 2 facts, make 10, and number bond sheets.
Age 6–7: facts within 10, working to 20
First grade asks for fluency within 10 and adding and subtracting within 20 (1.OA.C.6). Use doubles, fact families and fact drills.
Age 7–8: facts to 20 from memory
Second grade asks for fluency within 20, with all sums of two one-digit numbers known from memory by the end of the year (2.OA.B.2). Use subtraction games, bonds of 20 and flash cards.
Not sure where your child is?
Play the game with them. It starts small and moves up as answers come quickly, so a couple of rounds will show you. The guide to facts by grade has more on what the standards ask for.

An app is on its way
We're building a Sumtown app for iPhone with the parts that need a real app: offline play for car rides, a town map that remembers how far your child got, and a parent report on every fact. Until then, the whole game is free right here.
